About PFLAG National
PFLAG is the first and largest organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people, their parents and families, and allies.
Mission
Our mission is to build on a foundation of loving families united with LGBTQ+ people and allies who support one another, and to educate ourselves and our communities to speak up as advocates until all hearts and minds respect, value and affirm LGBTQ+ people.
Our Vision
PFLAG envisions a world where diversity is celebrated and all people are respected, valued, and affirmed inclusive of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.
PFLAG History
When PFLAG was initially created in the 1970s it meant Parents and Friends of Lesbians And Gays. PFLAG has expanded to include Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender and Queer + individuals , families, and allies.
When PFLAG founder Jeanne Manford marched with her son Morty in the 1972 Christopher Street Liberation Day March, she was overwhelmed by the number of weeping, rejected LGBTQ+ young people who embraced her along the route, each of them begging her to speak with their own parents and families. Jeanne knew instinctively that the transformation of family values and practices was essential to healthy LGBTQ+ life, so she and a committed group of parents (including her husband, Jules) and LGBTQ+ activists (including her son, Morty) began the very first support group for parents of LGBTQ+ people in NYC. In the basement of the Church of the Village on March 11, 1973, PFLAG was born!
